NCUA
Member accounts are insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, an arm of the National Credit Union Administration. NCUA is an independent agency of the United States Government. Individual Retirement Accounts are insured separately up to $250,000.
ESI
An additional $250,000 is insured by the Excess Share Insurance (ESI), a private insurance company.
