About Our Art...
Amy Yeager is an artist, illustrator, and snail enthusiast currently residing in Bloomington, Illinois. She has a BA in Scientific Illustration and an MFA in Drawing/Painting. She is a sometimes adjunct professor at Illinois State University and most-of-the-time curator at the McLean County Arts Center, where she also teaches.
Amy was born and raised overseas and grew up moving countries every 3-4 years. Even after she moved to the states for college, she followed a similar rhythm. She lived in Central Massachusetts for 4 years, and then Boston for 3. Then she moved to Bloomington, IL. July marked the beginning of her sixth year here, which is the longest she has lived consecutively in one place. This body of work serves as a commemoration to that time.

Because she does not drive, she walks, and as a result, she spends a lot of time looking at the ground. She is often struck by arrangements of things she comes across. Desiccated plant fragments and inanimate debris feel alive in an indescribable way. She believes in reverent observation and intentional, meticulous mark-making driven by an understanding that what she is looking at cannot look back, at least in a human sense.
Amy’s practice is rooted in place, and the ground beneath her feet has been in Central Illinois for the past five years. Through these paintings, she wants to share her deep respect for the complex, beautiful, and often overlooked ground we walk on and live from every day. It is her hope that the love and labor that goes into her paintings will prompt those who see them to look down intently at the ordinary dirt, leaves, sticks, and stones, and appreciate the nuances of the ground right beneath their feet.
